On the way up to Christchurch, we decided to stop off in Dunedin, which is gaelic for Edinburgh! A lot of the street names are the same, they have Princes, Hanover, Fredrick etc. It was nice to see some familiar places names, even though they got the orientation all wrong! We stayed at Leith Holiday Park, which was probably much nicer than camping in the real Leith in Edinburgh.
On our first day there we spent the morning having a looking around the Octagon, which forms the centre of the city. After lunch, we went to Cadbury's World!! They showed us around the factory and gave us lots of free samples :) We got to watch the Chocolate Waterfall which was awesome...I got chocolate splatted on my top by it but I didn't mind! There was also a huge mountain of Crunchies which looked very yummy!
It turned out that we were in Dunedin during the week of the University Fresher's Week. On our walk home to the campsite, one of the streets was all closed off so we stood and waited to see what was going on. Suddenly lots of first years came running round the corner, all dressed up in white togas with wreaths around their heads...older students then began pelting them with eggs from the street and balconies, while the first years kept running and screaming!! It was very funny to watch. Some of the male students tried to challenge the first year guys to drink random alcohol mixtures out of a funnel, many of which had eggs added in as well, ew! Later on we went to a japanese cafe and ate some barganious sushi and noodles, before heading to the campsite to watch Lost....we have managed to see the first two episodes and are so confused already!
On our second day we visited Baldwin Street, which is in the World's Guiness Book of Records as the World's Steepest Street. And it was very very steep! We walked/crawled up to the top, passing all of the houses which were built up on stilts. We got a good view over the city from the top, and laughed at the fat Americans who chose to drive up instead of walk! Later we drove out to the Otago Penisula which is renound for its wildlife and beaches. At Pilots Beach we saw 7-8 fur seals sunbathing on the rocks. They didnt seem to mind humans being close to them, and even if they had minded I think they were too relaxed and lazy to move! On another beach we saw the biggest seal I have ever seen, it may even have been a sea lion but we didnt want to go too close as he was all alone and probably quite territorial. We had hoped to see some Yellow-eyed Penguins as well but they were all out fishing for the day and not expected to walk back across the beach to their burrows until about 10pm.
