Today we woke up to find ourselves in the middle of a torrential rain storm! Luckily our tent appeared to still be waterproof despite its bargainous price. We got pretty wet while dismantling it though, and bundled ourselves into the car for the drive South. It continued to rain heavily for the rest of the day, and a think layer of low lying cloud covered the sea and mountain ranges. It was such a shame as the views over the West Coast are supposed to be amazing. We stopped briefly in Westport for some lunch, but there didnt seem to be much there apart from a very friendly golden retriever who was interested in our sandwiches! We continued on south to a small settling called Punakaiki. It would have been miserable to camp so we managed to get a small cabin for the night instead, for only $20 each! It was quiet nice watching the rain while being cosy inside.
In the morning we visited the local Pancake Rocks, formed by layers of ocean debris weathered away by rain. Luckily the sun came out long enough for us to walk around the track and get back to the car! We carried along down the cloudy West Coast until we reached Fox Glacier.
