Right guys, this is a somewhat overdue blog entry and takes us right back to the 20th of March! We left Hue on an overnight bus to Vientiane which was a very interesting experience. The journey started with an initial seven hours on a comfortable sleeper bus but we could not sleep much as we knew that we were the only two people that had two get off at midnight. We left the bus at some random cafe where we had to wait one hour for another bus to arrive and what a lovely bus it was...NOT!!! The bus was full of local people and there was no seats available for us. We were greeted with the smallest plastic chairs that were for meant for children and had to sit in the aisle! After a few hours the bus stopped again as we were ahead of schedule and would be far to early to cross the border as it did not open to 7:30am. The bus was very hot and fusty (northern) or musty (southern) and we spent three hours lying in a random street with a group of Vietnamese people! All good fun!
The remainder of the bus journery was ok and that was mainly due to the incredible landscape of Laos. We arrived in Vientiane at 3pm, 24 hours after leaving Hue and checked into a guesthouse. After dinner we stumbled acorss a French festival where there was a bbq and a french band who playing some music.
The next day we mainly relaxed and had a casual walk around the city visiting some of the temples and musuems. The evening was spent and the final nigght of the French festival where we ate some local sausages and drank plenty of the delicious beer lao!
The Sunday was spent visiting the Laos equivalent to the Arc de Triomphe and a trip the the National Museum.
Vientiane was very beautiful, full of cafes, restaurants and museums. The people were very friendly and seemed to be alot more honest compared to their neighbouring countries. There is a lot less traffic on the road and genrally slower paced.
Next stop: Vang Viang and Tubing...
