Hi guys here's what we've been up to at Hervey Bay.
On our first day we decided to walk to the beach. We didn't realise how far away our hostel was from everything and it ended up taking us an hour and 40 minutes to walk there! That might not sound like long but in the baking heat it felt like we'd been walking all day! A quick subway sorted us out though and we were on our way back (in a taxi!) Hervey Bay is another seaside resort and doesn't really have much to do. It is also really spread out so you basically have to hang round your hostel when your not on a trip. Our hostel was nice with a swimming pool and bar etc.
On our second day we did a trip to Fraser Island which is the world's largest sand island, a National Park and a World Heritage site. It was beautiful and we learnt so much about the island from our tour guide. First we did a walk through the rainforest and saw a huge lizzard. Next we went to Lake Mackenzie which has soft white sand and crystal clear water. We were warned about coming face to face with Dingos (wild dogs) and snakes. There are 17 types of snakes on the island 4 of which can kill you! After having a quick dip in the lake to cool down we went for lunch at one of the resorts on the island. Then we drove along 75 mile beach which was such an amazing experience. We were in a 4 wheel drive coach which launched over rocks and bumps and had to drive through the sea in some places. The beach was beautiful but we wondered why there weren't people swimming or surfing, the guide told us that there were tiger sharks all up and down the beach which would take a bite out of anything they swam into! Along the beach we saw the pinnacles which were coloured sand dunes and a shipwreck. We then went to Eli creek which is a fresh water creek which runs into the sea. The water was so clear and cool so we walked through it up the creek. We saw some Orb spiders which aren't huge but have fat bellies and looked horrible!
When we got back to our hostel that evening we decided to have a few drinks in Happy Hour. After I'd had a couple of glasses of wine and Ben had drunk a jug of beer we were going to leave to make our dinner (Dairylea sandwiches!) but bumped into another couple from Newton Abbott and a guy from Dawlish! It was so surreal as we haven't met anyone yet who even knows where Exeter is! It was weird talking to them about places we go to back home. Anyway, a few drinks turned into a pretty messy night - there's a picture of me at 1.30 in the morning when we got back to our room in the photo album!
Tonight we had our first australian BBQ! Nothing exciting just burgers but they were really nice! Tomorrow we leave for Noosa so we'll send another update from there.
