Hi guys, well we had the most amazing time of our whole trip so far in Fiji. We loved it there so much!
We arrived in Nadi on the main Island and stayed for 1 night in a lovely hotel where we had a great meal. The next day we had an early start to catch the ferry to our resort Botaira in the Yasawa Islands. As we had booked through the resort we got to travel in the Captains Lounge where we had free drinks all morning! So Ben started on the beers at 8.30am! We arrived at the resort to the welcome song sung by all the staff, a drink and a flower necklace which they put round our necks. We felt relaxed and at home immediately.
When we arrived at the resort there were only 11 of us which made a great atmosphere because we could all get to know each other and the staff really well. We made some amazing friends here who we had so much fun with while we were in Fiji. The staff were great too, they were so funny and once we'd got to know them we had a laugh with them too! The resort itself is ideal, it's only small so there are never too many people there and you can always have your own space on the beach or in a hammock! We stayed in Bures (traditional huts) which were really lovely and didn't have too many bugs living inside! The beach was right outside our door with gorgeous white sand lined with coconut trees and clear blue sea. As soon as you stepped into the sea there was the most amazing coral reef we've seen so we went snorkelling every day and saw loads of colourful coral and fish. We even saw a blue sting ray one day!
The food at the resort was also fantastic and we had breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea (with cake!) and dinner cooked for us every day. Each day the drum would bang at certain times and we'd just turn up at the table and eat - it was fab!
We were expecting to just relax and sunbathe for 10 days in Fiji (which we did do lots of) but we also had quite a cultural experience too. On our first day there was a coconut demonstration where the staff showed us how they weave coconut leaves to make baskets and then how they break open a coconut without using a knife. Ben was involved in the demonstration and had to chop the coconut in half with his hand! Luckily the coconut broke and not his hand! On the second coconut demonstration we went to the guy climbed up the tree to fetch a coconut which luckily none of us had to join in with!
We also visited the local village to see the church, the school and where people live. The walk to the village was really hard, straight up a huge hill, then back down the other side and across a beach. In the heat it was really tough and on the way back we were late so we had to rush, I could barely breathe by the time I reached the top of the hill! While we were in the village there was a rugby game on between the local villages so we got to watch that too. The fijians are really passionate about the game and it seemed like the whole village turned out to watch the match. The goal posts were made out of bamboo and at one point the ball got stuck in a coconut tree which could only happen in Fiji!
We went on two trips to snorkel with the Manta Rays which were just round the corner from our resort. This was the most amazing experience ever. Swimming along with these huge, graceful creatures was amazing. The first time we went though, we were swimming against the tide so it was a really tough swim and really hard to keep up with the rays and breathe through the snorkel! After we had swum with the rays, one of the staff would jump in and catch some fish with the spear gun for our dinner. Speaking of fishing, we also went out fishing one day and I managed to catch a white snapper! We caught about 5 fish in total but Ben didn't catch any, so I'm not letting him live that one down as I managed to catch one he he!
On a couple of the nights there we ate Lovo which is a traditional meal cooked underground. After the Lovo some of the people from the village came over and we had a Meke which is traditional singing and dancing. We had to join in with the Snake Dance (no snakes involved!) which was fun! One Sunday the church choir came over and sang for us which was really good. Their hymns are so much more cheerful and upbeat than ours! At every meal the "band boys" (3 of the staff who played guitars) would sing to us while we ate and by the end of our stay we got to know a lot of the songs off by heart!
The rest of the time we just lazed on the beach or read a book in our hammock and really relaxed which was so nice after all the sightseeing we've been doing for the last 6 months!
