Woo Franz Josef, So excited to be here.
Our hostel is amazing, huge big hot tub in the grounds called rainforest retreat. Soon as we were all checked in we headed straight in there it was sooo nice, it was raining and cold but it didnt matter. Think we stayed in a good hour before we all had a group nap as we were all pretty hungover and sleepy from the Poo Bar. That night htey had apizza buffet for $15 so all our group met up and went donw for that and a few drinks. They also named the winner of the fancy dress competitions and beer pong won!
After pizza we all had an early night as the majority of us were gettin up early for our glacier hike.
Franz Josef Glacier, the one of the fastest moving glaciers in the world and we were going up it. The weather here is just so unpredicatable and we have had so much more rain than anything else so we were all so worried that our trip might get cancelled. When I woke up at 7.30 first thing we did was check out the window and boom, bright blue skys.
We walked round to the centre to check in and to get geared up with waterproof trousers, huge coats, cramp ons, bags and hats.
From there we went down to the helipad for a briefing as not only do we hike the glacier we get taken up and down in a helicopter. I was so excited as it flew in and landed. We were all ushered in and had to out the big headphones on, then we were off. Wow it felt so strange but oh my word the views were the best. you go stright up ithrough the canyon and land righ in the middle of the glacier on the ice. As soon as we got off we had to out our cramp ons on our shoes, it was so slippery.
Our guide was called vince and was from england. It must be such a hard job as he has to hak out the steps for us to climb on. It really was one of the best experiences of my life, the ice formations were just huge and the photos really dont do it justice for how big it is.
We spent 3 hours hiking around, going into ice caves and just had the best time ever. I thought it would be hardwork but it was so easy walking with the cramp ons on.
Before we knew it the fun was over and was time to get back on the helicopter to take us down. The views were even better this time looking out over the whole town to the sea.
We got back and rested for a couple of hours and had dinner. That afternoon we had also booked in for a kayaking trip around the rainforst. It was really hard as the weather changed and got really windy, trying to kayak against the waves was just a nightmare I was soaked. Eventually we made it to the rainforest and that was so nice, all mirror lakes that was so hard to tell were the water eneded and the forest started.
The other 2 on our trip were so funny as neither of them had a clue how to kayak and spent more time being pulled out of bushes and trying to turn around to go the right way. Hilarious. Overall it was about 8 kilometers and my shoulders were killing.
With our trip we had a free dinner so thankfully after our busy day we headed straight in the bar for food. We stayed in the bar for bit that night but were all exhausted it was another earlyish night.
That day, we were so lucky as the trip after us was cancelled for the rest of the day as the wind was too strong for to get the helicopter up. This saved us a 7.30am bus time though. As there were so many people that couldn't get on the trip we had to leave later so they could do it. We had a well deserved lie in and then Josh our driver took us to do an hour walk to the bottom of the glacier which was really cool and good for pictures.
That drive we stopped at Lake Matheson and a few other little walks and arrived in Wanaka.
