Day 5:
Wow, after 2 days off, I kind of almost forgot what I originally came to Thailand for. Juuuuust kidding, of course I remembered why I was here, but it was a little rough getting back to the worksite after having two days off. And today was especially hard because it was just straight up like 6 hours of mixing concrete to do the floors. Which we totally got done. And what a relief. Because that is just shoveling and hauling gravel, dirt, and cement bags, and mixing it is quite the task. But my team has been so awesome and Teamwork that we switch out, and nobody has ever really done too much work. Plus, they feed us so well at the site we had plenty of snacks, and of course an amazing gourmet lunch. And, an ice cream truck came by the site today and we had ice cream sandwiches. Fun fact - Ice Cream sandwiches in Thailand is literally scoops of ice cream in between two pieces of bread. Add some nuts, and coconut topping, and Bam! You got yourself a surprisingly delicious snack.
Since we had to wait for the stuff to dry, that was pretty much all we could do today. However, tonight we got to rent mopeds to drive around the city (which was SO fun) and the people who drove them (dont worry, not me, I was just a passenger) got to practive driving one of the scooters at the site.
After dinner we got to hop on the scooters and drive around to see some cool places. and there were like ten or so scooters altogether in our little group. It so felt like we were a wicked cool biker gang. ;)
Day 6:
Ok! Floors are dry! And now the skill workers put in the windows, and we just had to continue laying the bricks. It is a long tedious process to do so, and we didnt finish it (we will finish tomorrow). But it is quite amazing to see how this house is actually starting to look like a legit house, and not just a hole in the ground. I honestly cannot believe that tomorrow is our last day building! It feels like we have been here forever, but not in the bad way. Its weird how I have just grown used to getting up and going to work at the site. It is rough work, and so hot, and my bug bites are absolutely KILLING me, but I am going to miss this place and the family for whom we are building for SO much. And even more so, I have grown so close to my team, it will be unbearably hard to leave them come Saturday.
After the build, (which was a short day today) we got to go to a local school and play games with them. Little did we know that these games would involve us getting drenched with baby powder, crazy rubber bands put in our hair, and water balloons thrown at us. But it was such a fun time with the little kids, and although we didnt speak the same language, we were able to get along just fine.
Khem was nice enough to let us come to his house tonight for snacks, (on our scooters! I am so buying one when I get home!) then we went to the mall near his house and shopped and had dinner. Pizza for dinner this time! He said it might be nice to have a break from Thai food. It was a nice break, but I actually haven't been getting sick of Thai food at all. But this was pretty much my first bite of CHEESE in two weeks, and that was wonderful.
