We went by pick up truck to visit the Golden triangle which was pretty cool - they take you to a high point on the mountain and you can look down at each of the three countries, Laos (which we got a boat across to visit there market), Berma (we didn't go across the there as cost 500B) and thailand. They told us alll about the wars they have had and how the police try to keep the bermese out as they keep trying to sneak in (could you blame them!!). When the water is high bodies are often washed down the river into thailand from Berma, very sad.
We went to an Opium museum which was a nice change from the usual temple and then headed on to Chiang Rai.
I liked Chiang Rai, it was a bit smaller and I had a couple of my nicest dinners here. They had a nice night market that wasn't so busy and they weren't so pushy so you could actually have a look without getting hassled. I didn't buy anything though due to the huge postage costs!!
We did go to a hot spring that was not too far away, I thought it was great but there was a bit of wining from the rest of the group! The springs were boiling though literally, we hired a private bath and bathed in the hotwater (mixed with some cooler water mind). Then chilled out for a little while as it was peaceful - sadly I appear to be the only one that carries a book around though - I was content!
The following day day we had an early start as we had to get a 4 hour bus to Chiang Mai, there we had a couple of hours free time before we had to get on the dreaded over night train to bring us back to Bangkok. I slept okay again but was pretty dehydrated upon arrival as I refused to drink most the day as I was scared I'd need to wee on the train in the dreaded toilets!
