Today we have a day trip into Venice leaving at 8:30.
Got the train, no hassles this time, first class for a one hour trip. Got off right in front of the canal. Wow! Can't believe this entire city just rises up out of the water. It's gorgeous. The waterways are buzzing with taxis, ferries, boats and gondolas.
Took a walk thru the streets and did some souvenir shopping, I mean a lot of shopping! Then decided to pay the €80 and have a gondola ride. How many times can you say you've done that! It was another moment, being slowly rowed around by a cute Italian named Mario. I think I'm falling for the gondoliers around here, especially the ones we call 35. Very cute!!
It's so funny watching them ducking under the bridges and calling out so they don't crash into each other. You can't even see the other gondolas coming around so they call out different sounds to warn each other. And Mario gave us a running commentary on cassanovas house and Marco polo house. Very interesting.
Time for lunch and we have more pizza, followed by gelato and coffee in the afternoon. More shopping and getting lost in all the laneways. Love it here. It's number 3 on my list, just after Paris and Florence.
Forgot to mention our bellinis which we stopped to sip in a little laneway watching the boats go past.
Can't tell you how many mask shops and murano glass shops we saw today. Uncountable!
Headed back to Verona on the 6:30 train. Our feet hurt tonite and we are really tired. But it was a brilliant day
