The rest of my time in Katanning passed without much incident - very Groundhog Day. I did manage to get out to the sheep sheds one (very) early morning and watched the shearers at work, as well as making friends with a lovely little collie and attempting to shear a sheep myself. I don't think I've found a new vocation.
I found myself getting a little homesick and wanting to move on a lot earlier than I thought, but hope that getting moving again with get me out of the doldrums and excited about travelling again. I met some brilliant and lifelong friends there - obviously it's unlikely I will see many of them again but facebook is a lifesaver in such situations!
Thamar, the Dutch backpacker who replaced Jo, was lovely and I'd hope to meet up with her back in Europe sometime - a fellow Disney lover, boost chocolate fanatic and gym fiend is hard to find! Apart from that I suppose I should end this entry with some final thoughts on Katanning. I think it is similar to most other towns in the region - quiet, subsisting mainly on sheep and wheat, and with a stubborn attitude that seems largely left in the 70's! Some peoples' opinions and attitudes really shocked me, the language used and open racism made some shifts difficult to work, conversely the warmth and humour of others made working a pleasure. If I never hear Neil Diamond, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen or 'Who stopped the rain' ever again it will be too soon. Likewise horseracing radio. Hopefully for the remainder of my trip people will stop asking if I'm German, telling me the English drink their beer warm, and informing me the East Coast is rubbish compared to WA. If that is a fact then I may just skip it and go straight to New Zealand, haha.
So here I am on the bus back to Perth, catching up on some reading and getting super excited about seeing Josh and Hannah in their new pad. Hopefully from now I'm going to have more interesting stories to tell, and also manage to lose some weight and thus take some photos where I don't look like a small house.
