Whilst I had the luxury of Jo's car I also visited Denmark on the South Coast, again a 2 hour drive away but Florence and the Machine sure makes a drive fly by. Although I loved Albany Denmark was definitely my favourite of the two towns. I arrived in good time and checked into my little hostel, a cute little place called the Blue Wren travellers rest, replete with chatty South African owner and rotund Labrador to welcome you to their home.
One of the main attractions in Denmark (or at least relatively nearby) are the giant tingle trees and the treetop walk in the Valley of the Giants forest. On my way to the forest I saw my first kangaroo- sadly it was dead at the side of the road but I consider it my first official viewing! The forest itself is very impressive - towering trees with massive root systems and gaps in the trunks you can drive a car through, it was a pleasant wander through to get to the treetop walk, and since it was relatively cool and an overcast day I could almost imagine I was at home! The treetop walk itself is hoisted up amongst the tops of the trees, think GoApe without the swings and zip lines. A slightly vertigo inducing drop can be seen through the mesh of the floor, but the views are magnificent and it's nice feeling so close to the nature round there. So after indulging my inner tree-hugger I drove along the coast to see some of what the national parks had to offer. I have to mention here how quiet it was along the coast, I saw hardly any other people and it does make me wonder if Australians go and see their own country! Amongst the sights I saw were the greens pool and the Elephant Rocks - which were really cute and possibly more so since I've spent time with the real thing. My trip to Denmark was a flying visit really, I saw what I wanted to see but did feel a little rushed, plus spending too much time by yourself can get a bit dull, so I'm looking forward to catching back up with Nina and having a more leisurely jaunt around the rest of Australia.
