Last weekend we went to stay in Meath/West Meath (pronounced meed) with Liam Cunningham and his family.
We meet Liam at his local Soccer match (of which he is the coach and occasional player). The soccer field was in the walled in gardens of on old manor. It was a lovely place to watch the game, the entrance was like that of a secret garden. Eamon and I didn't watch the whole game (not really into soccer) instead we went for a walk around the area. Next to the soccer field was a secret walled in cattle yard, which is shown in our photos.
We went out to dinner in Meath to a lovely restaurant, then headed through the thick fog to a little pub in West Meath. A secret knock was required to attain entry. It was like sitting in someone's lounge room not at a pub. Eamon went out the back for a smoke and as usual started pocking around looking at buildings etc. the first thing he came across was a carpentry work shop (Where they make the local coffins) then he was looking in the barn and found the barman in there waiting for his ewe to lamb! We might come from the country but that doesn’t happen at the Nar Nar Goon.
The next morning Liam took us for a drive around the area to see the local sights (very hard to see things when the fog is so heavy that you can be 20m from a huge castle with no visibility of it!). On our drive we went to the peat bogs to see where they dig up the turf for burning, whilst heading to Eileen's father's plot we came across an IRA shooting training session (not really but with the fog it looked very secretive). The final place we saw before returning to Liam's was a newly thatched house. The Thatcher took a whole summer to do the roof.
We hope that everyone is well
Love from Bec & Eamon
