Medical Emergency! So, after I signed off yesterday, we had an annoucement from the Captain that we were being diverted to land due to a medical emergency on board. The patient would then be transported to a waiting tender boat and then airlifted to houstan USA. How exciting! Not for the poor chap who took ill of course....The divertion wasnt going to affect our time of arrival in Nicaragua because we were not at full speed. So.... it was about 7pm when we spotted land and the small town of Huatulco Mexico. We piled up to the deck to watch the transfer of the poorly patient....Jeez what a heart stopping moment that was. (no pun intended) The tender boat which pulled alongside our ship was tiny....if you imagine we are bobbing up and down in the water....we are way above this little boat and it got trapped under us a few times, tipped up precariously and looked really really unstable. They got the man's wife on board first and she waved up to us to say she was ok....The next thing was the air filled with screams as the tender tipped again, just as the man was being stretchered on board. One crew member fell into the water and it was chaos. They got him on safely and we all clapped loudly (and stopped holding our breath!) They were then taken away in the little boat and we could hear the poorly man shouting "HAPPY NEW YEAR" really loudly....so hopefully he will be ok. Not sure what was wrong with him....but it stands a chance that it was a heart issue. He was in good hands anyway and they did a fantastic job of getting him to shore. Was just scary to watch. I remember a similar one a few months back in Norway....they actually dropped the lady on the stretcher over board into the freezing sea....she didnt make it. So Kudos to Princess cruises and the people of Huatulco for getting it done and getting it done right. We chatted to the bar staff who said that medical emergencies do happen a fair bit on board. The average age is about 130 so it stands a chance......
