Retired & Traveling
We visited the Tourism Office near the port early this morning, and signed up to do a bus tour tomorrow of some nearby towns. We also got a lot of information on different activities here in Marseille. We then walked over to our food tour meeting point and proceeded to patiently wait. At 10:00, which was the appointed meeting time with no guide showing up, we knew something was wrong. Rich called the office and found out that we were in the wrong location (through no fault of ours), so the guide came to meet us. We ended up being the only ones on the entire tour. Our guide, Emanuel, told us that normally they don't do the food tour for less than 4, but it's new and he decided to do it for us. :)) We began by walking to a place to sample a Navette, which is an orange flavored shortbread type of biscuit/cookie. Not really a strong flavor, just kind of mild. Next was a sampling of chocolates made from olive oil and almonds...it was delicious, rich and creamy. And pricey! One small box that had about 15 small pieces was 20€. We climbed up a very steep incline and came out on a beautiful view of the port and Notre Dame church which sits high above the city. Emanuel served us some red wine (and yes, I had some and it was good), and some fresh bread with a tapenade made from black olives and anchovies. I thought it was delicious and Rich even seemed to enjoy it. After this, we were supposed to taste the bouillabaisse (a fish soup), but the vendor was a no-show. So we skipped it and went instead to Sardin's for some fried sardines with pashini, (I think that's what he called it), which is made from chick pea flour. Both of those were quite tasty. We went to an incredible outdoor market where all kinds of fresh food was for sale--we stopped at a pizza place and Rich and I shared a slice. He showed us this one store that sold all these different types of salt--I've never seen so many types before, I didn't even know they were available!! Next to the salts were all these spices, and curries--the place smelled amazing! There were nuts and olives and candies, it was a bit overwhelming!! We stopped at an outdoor cafe for a drink and raw oysters (of which I had none--yuck), we were supposed to try sea urchins but the market was out of them. He offered to get me some shrimp, but I was fine with just a beer. The olive oil place was closed by the time we got there, so that was another missed place. We could tell this was a new endeavor for him, since his timing and vendors were off so much. We then walked all the way back to where we had first begun and had an entire lunch, with fried calamari (which I normally don't like but this was delicious), ratatouille, linguini, clams and some other crustacean that Emanuel couldn't remember the name. Another long walk to get ice cream ended our tour. I was in quite a bit of pain at this point due to forgetting my meds this morning and all the walking we had done. It was fun but seemed a bit unorganized and too much walking between stops for me.
