Retired & Traveling
We caught the train to Florence bright and early, walked around the famous area where the Duomo is and then went to meet our food tour guide. When the appointed time came and went with no guide, Rich called them and found out that the guide assigned to us wasn't able to get in to Florence due to a train accident. So disappointing! We decided to take a look inside the Duomo and were glad it was free--I don't know what all the hoopla is about--as far as churches in Europe go, this one is pretty plain. We asked the tour company to point us in the direction of where we would've been going, which involved a local market kind of like we've seen all over Europe. We found it and bought some cheese and had lunch in one of the small cafes there. We caught a train back out to our area, then drove up the mountain past the Farmhouse where we're staying to see Florence from up above, the view was amazing! We stopped at a local restaurant and made dinner reservations for Monday night. We were going to eat there tonight, but they were having some fundraiser celebration and were closing at 6:00. This has not been my day for things going right! I can't complain too much, tho, because lots has gone right and we've had such good weather!! Since it was my birthday, Rich took me to this restaurant that is a two minute walk from the house. Most of the staff spoke a little English and were very nice. Traci, I used your suggestion and they were on Yelp. :)) We arrived at 7:30 (opening time) and had the place to ourselves. By the time we left, it was filling up--I can't get over how late these Europeans eat dinner! We got a combination platter of grilled meat and it was all delicious. We shared a chocolate soufflé that was better than the picture shows. A wonderful meal!
