We had a lazy morning and finally left for our food tour about 45 minutes before we had to be there. We decided to take the tram this time since we weren't going very far, and we got to see more of the area we are living in. We were there in no time.
We waited for a bit and kept thinking our guide would be a no-show, but a couple minutes before noon, she showed up. So did a group of six others, which always makes it more fun.
We had two Aussies, three from New Zealand , one from England and us! Our guide, Mica (pronounced Mischa) was a native but had studied English as her major and spoke with barely a trace of an accent. She was very easy to understand.
We began the tour with appetizers from an up and coming neighborhood called Kristina, named after a former queen. We had a spread made from some kind of cheese with chopped ham and chives--quite tasty! A marinated pork sandwich with onions and pickles came next, followed by sausage and stinky cheese with bread and butter. The cheese doesn't really stink that much, I can't recall why it got its name. All were very good.
After that place, we walked to another restaurant and ordered a beer and some fried cheese. I thought the fried cheese was ok, but I'm used to dipping it in marinara and there was none to be had.
We left that place and walked for quite a while and just when I'd ask someone where the heck she was going, she showed us the river boat that's part of the public transportation system! Just like a tram or subway!! The boat looked a whole lot like ours! We boarded and took off for the other side.
Once back ashore, we caught a tram and walked a ways to the next eatery. This one was recently awarded a Michelin Bib, which is the equivalent of a star for a restaurant that serves lower priced unique food.
It was definitely unique! My drink was a beetroot lemonade. It was "interesting " at first, but the more I drank, the better it tasted. By the time I was finished, I actually liked it!
The food was a celery root sliced thinly, served with potatoes and onion. It was good! Then there was a sliced beet with some other things which I've now forgotten. And finally a potato dish in a cream sauce that they are famous for. I didn't care for it.
Dessert was a slice of chocolate cake served with coffee (or in Rich's case another yucky lemonade), and a apple pie thing that was delicious!
I thought we were finished since we'd had dessert, but we had one more place to visit. It took a while to get there, which turned out to be the exact park where we'd been the day before on our bike tour and had eaten a Czech hotdog!
We were treated to a drink and we had a beautiful view overlooking the city. Our guide gave us all a map with lots of tips on where to eat, sights to see, etc.
We said our goodbyes, hugs all around--they were all so much fun! One of the New Zealand couples gave us a card with their contact info and said if we get to their part of the world, to look them up! More international friends!
Another perfect weather day and a full belly, what more could you want? :)
