Retired & Traveling
We were originally scheduled to be in port at 8:00 am, then they announced it wouldn't be until 10, then noon. Kateva had a hair appt scheduled which she'd changed at least 3 times...so she changed it yet again for 8 am. The ship was having a brunch at 10:45, so we had a small continental breakfast in our room since we were going to the brunch. We sat with some very nice people, one couple from Dennison, TX & another couple from St. Louis. The buffet was fabulous as always. After we ate, the ship was getting docked and Kateva was fit to be tied to get a wheelchair to take her to shore. It was a long walk and some of it was uphill, so we had to get someone to push her since I had her walker. She made a big scene and embarrassed me quite a bit but I stayed calm and rolled with it. We got on our tour bus at long last and were off. She didn't want to get off at any of the stops, so I made sure she got back onto the boat and caught another bus to ride back into town. At this point, it was already getting late in the afternoon and the bus driver announced that the last bus pickup would be at 4:00. This didn't leave a whole lot of time for any touring but I was determined to see the old Governors Mansion which was built by Huey Long. I love all the old architecture in the homes and this one was really something. It is 25,000 sq ft but isn't the governors home any longer. (The newer mansion is 50,000 sf if you can believe it.) Huey Long planned on being president of the US one day, so he modeled the home after the White House, complete with an Oval Office. (He was murdered when he was still quite young in the Capitol building!) There were docents in every part of the home and the tour took about 45 min! I also wanted to tour the new state Capitol building, so hustled over there and managed to get up to the 27th floor. The views of the city were pretty cool especially of the river. We didn't have a cocktail party to attend (FINALLY!) so I opened the free bottle of wine we got on our first night. After a couple glasses, I managed to walk down the stairs to dinner. We had the best meal yet--smoked salmon, clam soup (best I've ever eaten!) and lobster tails--very tender and oh so tasty! William ordered three, they were so good! I listened to a little of the show that they were offering this evening and then called it a night.
