Retired & Traveling
Yep--awake at 3:00 am. :(( It gets light here about 3:30-4:00, which also makes it difficult for me to sleep later. I stepped out onto our balcony as we were pulling into Ketchikan and a bald eagle flew right up next to me! We are on the 11th deck, so we're fairly high up--he stayed flying alongside for a good 30 seconds--AMAZING!! And of course, I didn't have my camera or phone on me for a photo.
I waited for Ashley to wake up at a reasonable hour (as she said) and enjoyed breakfast delivered to our room. We had an early tour scheduled and met our group out on the dock.
After a quick bus ride with a very energetic and entertaining guide, Kat, we arrived at Saxman Totem Pole Park. We watched a video about the culture of the Alaskans, then took a short hike thru the woods to their clan's lodge. The Interior was all cedar and we watched dancers perform, including an adorable 4 yr old boy and 2 yr old girl.
We were then led outside to hear the stories of the totem poles. Most of the stories were very sad with unhappy endings. I thought it was interesting to learn what they represent.
It was soon time to head back to the ship. We were going to catch a shuttle back into town, but decided to eat lunch on the ship instead. We tried the new pizza place and enjoyed it. After lunch, we found a quiet lounge on the 15th deck and just hung out enjoying the view.
We ate dinner in one of the speciality restaurants and had a really good steak. After the early roll call and a full belly, we both were so tired, we decided to just enjoy a good nights sleep. No magician for us! LOL
