Retired & Traveling
We docked really early into Skagway and didn't have to be anywhere until 9:30, so we decided to eat in the main dining room. We opted to sit with other passengers since we seem to get a better table by doing so. This proved to once again be the case.
We were joined by a couple of couples--one from from Las Vegas and the other from Tucson. We enjoyed chatting with them about various excursions and onboard activities and then it was time to meet our excursion group.
We caught a shuttle that took us all around Skagway and gave us the history of the town. It's VERY small, only about 600 full time residents and definitely depends on the cruise ship industry. Lots of tourist shops and places to eat that close once the summer season is over. Sort of depressing!
We drove out to a famous graveyard where some infamous Skagway people are buried. There's a trail in the cemetery that leads up to a beautiful waterfall, so we made the hike to see it. Take a look at the pictures--they don't begin to capture how pretty or how powerful the force of the water was!
After leaving there, our tour bus took us to the summit of White Pass, which is where the US/Canadian border is. Lots of beautiful snow topped mountains and more waterfalls. And it was really windy, too. Definitely not Houston weather!!
We were brought back to town and opted to leave our tour in order to grab a bite to eat and do some souvenir shopping (ie magnets). We found a quaint little place that our guide recommended, and decided to share an order of fish tacos since they were $20 for 2 tacos!! They were quite tasty but definitely not worth $20!!
A quick stop into a souvenir shop and we were all set to get back to the ship. We ordered room service since we were still hungry and afterwards, Ashley napped while I read and worked on this.
We will set sail in an hour or so for Victoria and will be at sea all day tomorrow and most of the next day as well, so no more updates on the blog for a while since I can't get a signal while at sea.
Note the pictures of the sail away from Skagway--the water color was just amazing with the snow covered mountains--just beautiful. It was warm enough to sit out on the balcony and just take in all the beauty. I can't get over the fact that it's so uninhabited!!
