The weather is superb: in the high 70’s and sunny. We went to a neat place for breakfast called Shepherd’s Pie on the Green. We sat outside and overlooked a large, beautiful lawn (“the Green”) and New England colorful trees on the side of the hill in the distance.
We spent the rest of the day sightseeing around Quechee and Woodstock (about seven or eight miles west). It’s beautiful here. We don’t want to leave.
Quechee, along with much of the surrounding area, was hit hard by Hurricane Irene. Both Quechee and Taftsville (down the road) have covered bridges. Both were closed due to hurricane damage. Both bridges are still standing, but the roads leading to them were pretty much washed away. The river overflowed its banks by about 36 feet. Lots of damage. Some parts of buildings were lost to the torrent, while others were left with tons of mud inside. The people there are amazing. They’re already rebuilding and reopening businesses. It would be interesting to see the place in a year.
Along the way today we did see the model train museum. It wasn’t really a museum, more a layout. Interesting to see, though.
Dinner was at Firestones Restaurant in Quechee. The evening was balmy, and we sat outside on the patio. This is the life.
Still didn’t install the tire transmitter.

Dan H Some have commented that the "great color" doesn't look all that great in the photos. As a photographer, let me say that it's very hard to shoot fall color for two reasons:One, is that without a polarizing filter the color on foliage gets muted by glare from the leaves (I suspect that Bill and Barbara don't have such a filter). The second problem is that people are used to seeing photos of fall colors at craft fairs, in postcards, books and in photo gallaries. 100% of those photos have been "helped" in Photoshop (or similar SW) to boost the saturation (vibrance) of the colors and usually to increase in contrast as well. So, those "fixed" shots have now become the expectation, so a straight out of the camera shot looks less impressive compared to that expectation.
Shannon Happy Anniversary! Sorry we woke you up :P
Shannon Oooo... you should have gone on a hot air balloon ride! :D
wjmccain Wow. Didn't know about a polarizing lens. It is true that what we're seeing is a bit more vibrant. I could fix them in PS and have a bit on some, but would rather leave them close to what they really are.
wjmccain Don't be sorry about waking us up. I loved the thought. Sorry I wasn't more coherent.
wjmccain We could have. We saw them start to set up the rig as we were eating breakfast one morning.
Leigh Ann Nice spread!
wjmccain And we're seeing home after gorgeous home throughout the whole trip. There's a lot of land around these places.
Shannon Why didn't you?
wjmccain Dad isn't interested. He says he already has enough hot air in him.
Earle Happy Anniversary!! Looks like you're having fun. Keep up the great posts!
