My last day. This two and half weeks has flown by, that said, Singapore seems like a distant memory so much has happened.
Packed and checked out of the hotel I venture off to get my suit carrier. From there it was supposed to be a trip to see the Tian Tan Buddha however after some hassle with a train ticket to get there and knowing time was short I knocked it on the head and accepted that it was one thing I was not going to get done on this trip. Good excuse to come back right.
Instead I decided to head to the botanical and zoological gardens. It wouldn't be my last day in a place if I didn't visit the gardens after all! I also wanted to know what zoological gardens were...primates apparently. Loads of primates in massive cages (cages sounds cruel but they were well provided for and loads of space, perhaps enclosure is a better word). The gardens were pretty good and there were a lot of throw-backs to the colonial days of British rule, statues of King George and placards declaring the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh. Pretty chilled out, it was good.
Four o'clock comes around and it is time for my suit carrier and I to collect my suit. Takes a little longer than planned but no biggy. One tailored suit, extra trousers and tailored shirt courtesy of my newly found Hong Kong tailor (they are everywhere). Tick in the box.
Back to the hotel to collect my luggage and time to indulge in one of Hong Kong airports greatest offerings. At Kowloon train station I check in my luggage, to be seen again in England. Time to enjoy what I couldn't the day before... the highest bar in the world! The station is joined to the ICC and the contains the Ritz-Carlton so a far from strenuous saunter to the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton and a quick quip of 'O-zone bar please' gets me whisked up to the 80 something floor of the building....apparently the real hotel lobby. From here I walk across to a second elevator to propel me the final 18 floors to the o-zone bar.
Free entry by the way and higher than the pay-per-view viewing deck! The bar is cool, understated with funky lighting creating a chilled out mood, sofas and low tables fill the place. I am greeted by a 'hostess' who asks if I would like to sit on the terrace 'there are free seats on the terrace'. Outside at this altitude? 'yep'. It's a little chilly, very windy although in the terrace you don't notice too much and the grey day is drawing to a close. My timing is perfect. I order a beer and some slider burgers and perch myself on a stool overlooking Kowloon and Victoria Harbour. An angled sheet of glass all that is between me and a 490m descent. This is properly top floor!
The sun sets over Hong Kong and I enjoy the buildings coming to life at night, almost talking to each other through the medium of lighting, office lights turn off as Christmas lights turn on. I lap up the atmosphere with another beer and snap a few photos. These views are un-rivalled by anything I have experienced. I can see straight across to the Peak where I was the evening before, looking at myself of yesterday, the reverse angle of the City.
This building is particularly iconic in Hong Kong as not only is it the tallest building (7th in the world) but at night it comes to life displaying pictures and messages treating the entire length of all four sides as a continuous television screen (white light only). From my position on the roof terrace I can see these strip lights flickering and changing, creating an owl, or love hearts or advertising the Facebook site of something or other.
Never have I been so relaxed about travelling, the beer probably helped, or maybe the fact that I didn't' care if I happened to miss my flight. This was a fitting way to spend the last hours of my time in Hong Kong. Enjoying the best that it provides: Spectacular skyline views in a classy, atmospheric bar with the train to the airport a mere 500m elevator ride away.
