We have just arrived in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast which is just over an hours drive from Byron Bay but we have now crossed over from New South Wales into Queensland. It's definitely getting warmer now as we go further North. The campsites also a bit quieter as it looks like the kids are now back to school. Byron Bay was amazing, probably our favourite place so far. It was really busy because of the Aussie Day weekend but its a really cool little town with loads of backpackers and old hippies going about. The town centre is quite compact and right next to the beach which makes it really easy to get about the place. There's loads of great little cafes, restaurants, pubs and shops. Our campsite was about a 10 min walk from the centre of town and right on Clarke Beach which is one of the two main beaches. You could walk along the beach into town in the evening which was pretty cool. The weather has been great the last few days. Really hot during the day with the odd shower of rain at night. There was a thunder storm passed through one night but it seemed to bypass us with just a light shower of rain
The campsite was nice but was really busy over the weekend. Think we managed to get the last pitch. The site is full of bush turkeys which was a bit strange at first seeing all these turkeys wandering about but you soon get used to them. I managed to get my first surf lesson at the Byron Bay Surf School. Was great fun but was really hard work as you fairly get knocked about a bit by the waves. I did manage to stand up a few times but will need a bit more practice, and a few days to recover.
We went up to the Cape Byron Lighthouse which is just a few minutes up the road from Byron Bay and is the most easterly point on mainland Australia. The views up and down the coast from there were pretty amazing and it's a great place to spot the dolphins swimming about in the bay. Anyway, it's about time to crack open a cold beer as the sun is out and it's time to get the barbecue on. Hoping to catch the tennis tonight as Andy Murray is playing the young Aussie Nick Kyrgios in the quarter final of the Australia Open so that will probably be on in a lot of the pubs. The Socceroos are also playing in the semi-final of the Asia cup tonight so should be a good atmosphere in town!
