Ya ya.
Ok. We have just left Port St John's where we probably had our most terrifying experience yet..........no, it wasn't that Laura had a whole day of not complaining about her back or her stomache, it was that we actually went on a 3 hour hike!
Yes you read correctly. It wasn't that we planned on going on one......in fact, our guide told us we were going to his local village for a few beers and a game of pool but when the taxi, (cleverly disguised as an open truck with two benches in it) stopped along side a steep hill with a fairly well trodden slope going up, we knew we were in for it.
What we didn't know is that we would be crossing rivers, walking planks with 30ft drops below, and barefoot rockclimbing in the PISSING RAIN! We've both discovered that there is a point whereby you can't get any wetter, and we went beyond that point. It was scarey, horrendous in parts, but at the end of it we came across a beautiful waterfall that was almost worth seeing. Having thought we were going for a few cheeky beers, Laura was also just wearing her flip flops so had to do most of it barefoot!
Anyway, we lived to tell the tale and our cheeky guide, Richard, found thw whole thing quite amusing......I wouldn't have liked to have seen his Risk Assessment for it though!
Other than that, Port St John's is quite a sleepy town (if you picture an old clip from The Walton's you'll be virtually there) and Richard redeemed himself that night by actually taking us all to the village he was born in. We were made to feel very welcome and the village shabeen (Bar for those of you again not called Mel or Bastow) opened up especially for us.........perhaps very polite or perhaps they saw all 20 Europeans turn up in a big taxi very happy to spend about 50p on a litre of beer!
So after an hour or so everyone was quite merry and we decided to buy everyone in the village a beer and the results were hilarious............We can't quite put into words the scene of local villagers pissed on beer (mixed with whatever else they had taken during the day) but Laura did manage to get a clip on her camera so we're hoping to upload it so you can all see it. We just hope you find it as funny as we did as we still can't stop laughing about it now. A few tips on watching the clip
1) Try to spot the Christmas jumper
2) Keep an eye out for the latest fashion items when dancing in your local bar (Welly boots)
3) The woman in the yellow jumper who had clearly been on more illegal substances than we can name, who was politely asked to leave the shabeen shortly after the video was taken!
We are off to PE on Thursday and are quite looking forward to just keeping all of our stuff in one place for 5 weeks. Will upload more photos and THAT clip when we get chance.
Lots of Love
Laura and Jo xxx
