Backpacker Stuffs
ROTURURA - NORTH ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND
Tamaki Maori experience
This is something that I think everyone travelling to New Zealand should do. This gives you a taste as in to how Maori people used to live and how many still live today.
Although commercialised now it's still a great experience meeting the people, getting involved in various activities and getting to see the real life Hacka (its fr...ikkin scary!!!) For just $110 ($90 if your on Kiwi Experience or book thorugh Base Hostel) You get picked up from the hostel at about 7pm then taken to the Maori camp. Whilst on the bus the Maori driver talks you through some history and you all pick out someone to be Chief for the night. Small buses - fab atmosphere.
On arrival the Maori tribe of Tamaka came out doing a very scary welcoming dance that I think is to say, we welcome you into our home but if you come with anger or want to kick off you best do it here because it's all peace inside our village. It's cool. I won't spoil what happens next but its soooooo good
Then comes the time of the food... Daaayyaammm Maori peoples know how to eat... Hangi, all buried in the ground cooking and smoking on hot stones for hours until it's time to eat. Beef, lamb all the vegetables to go with it in an all you can eat layout. The hungry backpacker dream!!! The food was absolutely amazing worth the money alone. Then desert - which wasn't buried but as delicious. I LOVE FOOD!!!
A final sing and dance and the Maori experience was over. Another high recommendation for those wanting a little look into Maori life and a heck of a feast. Literally - I would pay just for the food again. Yummals.
