We returned to Rio for one night only before our flight home. We celebrated by going to a Brazilian BBQ, where you get to eat as much as you like. You get a red and green card to indicate to the waitors when you want more meat. Ben's card was constantly on green and he ended up eating 12 cuts of meat!
The next day we went on a favela tour. Favelas are the slum areas in Rio and most are run by gangs. We visited the pacified one which are now controlled by the police. The people who live there are not as poor as you might think and they have a real strong sense of community. We got to look around an after school club and had the opportunity to buy some crafts made by the local people. Although it felt a bit intrusive looking being a white foreigner, it was interesting to see how much the government are doing to help to improve living conditions here.
Afterwards, we returned to the hostel and prepared for our flight home. We were both excited to see our family and friends but anxious to return to the real world.
