We left our lovely station stay at Wooramel this morning heading towards Denham and Monkey Mia. We will miss the fabulous hot water artesian spa.
It's always exciting when we pack up and hit the road again with the caravan, on our way to a new place to see new sights and further our knowledge of the history of our fabulous small towns. It's also exciting (some may find it stressful but we love it) not knowing what's ahead or where we will end up for the night.
We stopped at a roadhouse to refuel and I got out to see some cockatiels and finches in a big aviary. They were screeching and flying around like they were scared and I soon discovered why. A big kestrel (I think it was a kestrel but I don't really know my birds of prey) was sitting on top of the aviary and watching them like a 'hawk'. His eyes were scaring me but I still ran back to the car to get my camera so I could get a close up.
We drove south to Shark Bay, stopping first at Hamelin Pool to see the world heritage stromatolites. We were there at low tide so could walk out on the board walk over the odd looking ancient rocks.
The rocks themselves are not what I would call beautiful to look at, but reading about how they are formed in the highly salty water was interesting.
Next stop was at Shell Beach to see the beach made totally of shell. We found this a little disappointing as, while the vast curve of beach is a stunning white colour, the shells don't look like the millions of whole shells you see in the tourist brochures. Rather, they are actually tiny bits of broken shell that are hard to touch, like embedded rock.
As we drove we rang to book a campsite at Monkey Mia for tomorrow, and then we searched for a place to spend the night somewhere along the Shark Bay Peninsula. Just before sunset we found a lovely spot right on the edge of the water, with only another couple of caravans well spaced out for company. Gadi and Cadbury went for a walk up the hill and then we sat down to enjoy nibbles and a drink as we watched another gorgeous sunset over the Indian Ocean.
Tonight we will fall asleep to the sound of gentle waves only a few metres from our door and we will dream of the gentle dolphins splashing in the shallows that we will be privileged to see in the morning.
Night night xx
