Woke up freezing this morning, forgetting how cold nights can get on the Nullarbor. Tonight we will put our carpets down for added warmth on the floor and make sure we wear thermals to bed.
We set off late (as usual), in no particular hurry, and stopped at the nearby Caiguna Blowhole to have a look. It wasn't blowing, however we did read the sign about how the blowholes were formed. We learnt that all blowholes 'breathe' but the ones on the Nullarbor breathe more than any other blowhole caves in Australia. They breathe out when the air pressure falls and breathe in when the air pressure rises.
There are two time zone changes along the Nullarbor, so today we changed our clocks forward 45 minutes, meaning when we stopped for lunch it was a really late lunch.
We drove for another couple of hours after lunch, soaking up the surroundings of this major road from west to east. We followed an escarpment that runs from Madura Pass, where we stopped to appreciate the view over the vast plain below, all the way to the South Australian border.
The ground cover is rich with green and grey shrubbery, occasional forests of trees, a few yellow and white wild flowers and bright yellow wattle heavily scenting the air.
The only wildlife we saw was a couple of kangaroos hopping away and a bloated dead cow by the side of the road.
We picked a campsite called Jilah Rock Hole and pulled up just as the sun was setting, choosing a site way out the back past quite a few other campers sitting by blazing fires for warmth.
Gadi misjudged the direction to park the car for the satellite (which needs to face north east) and then found the 'marriage saver' device he bought to find the TV signal wasn't charged, so no Monday night ABC TV for him!
Went outside to make a phone call and discovered the most beautiful night sky above, filled with millions of twinkly stars, easily seen constellations and the Milky Way cutting across the blackness.
Cooked dinner and spent some time uploading photos to the laptop before we both watched a TV series separately - me on my iPad and Gadi on the laptop.
All cosied up and ready for bed with bed socks on.
Night night, sweet dreams xx
