We arrived in Salzburg right after lunch time. Our hostel looked close on a map, but was on the other side of the train tracks so we had to ride the S-Bahn in a big U to get to our stop. Not a big deal, but made it a little confusing when we arrived. Our hostel is nice. It is on top of a shopping mall with a grocery store so that is convenient. Ashley still is not feeling the best, so we went to the store and found some gatorade and got some pizza for lunch.
After that we rested for a bit before heading out to explore. The castle in Salzburg sits up on a hill overlooking the town and all around the base are old pretty buildings. It is really cool and a great town to just walk around in. They happened to be having the "Long Night of the Church" which is a yearly tradition where all the churches in town open their doors for 24 hours and let people explore things that are usually closed off. We walked into several churches and even an old cemetery and crypt. Everything was pretty crowded and we had not know about this before, so we had done no research and really had no idea what to go look at, but we tried to make the most out of it.
After that, we worked our way to the Augustiner (same beer as Munich) beer hall. Last trip, after we picked up Ashley in Zurich, our first stop was Salzburg. Uncle Steve, Deyton, Ashley and myself all went to this beer hall for dinner on that trip so it holds a special place in our memory and we wanted to go back. The hall is huge and you have to grab your stein off the shelf, warm it in water and hand it to the bartenders as they pour the beer out of old wooden casks. They have food stands set up all around and you can go buy little bits of everything as you drink your beer. We had a dinner, a few liters of beer and caught of a bit of the Eurocup before walking home.
On Saturday it was Ashley's birthday! We planned to go to the Eagles Nest, so we woke up early and headed for the Hauptbahnhof. To get to the Eagles Nest we had to take a train to Berchtesgarten, then ride a bus to Obersalzburg and then catch ANOTHER bus to the Kerchsteinhaus. All together, the round trip took around 6 or 7 hours. There was call for rain, but we had planned on seeing this the whole trip and did not want to let a little bad weather deter us. It really never rained on us, just was overcast and drizzly. Once we made it to the entrance, you get to enter the original tunnel and elevator Hitler had used in the 40's. Pretty eery and cool. At the top, we were a bit disappointed. The house had been converted to a restaurant / beer garden that literally took up the whole house so there was nothing really to see inside. We walked around for a bit but the fog ruined the view, which is the whole reason to go up there. We got a beer and some cake and killed about an hour before heading down.
The buses really did not help Ashley feel better. She constantly feels nauseous, dizzy and tired and the big busses driving up tiny mountain roads was not what the doctor ordered. By the time we got back, she was drained, so we decided to stay in and watch a movie as she rested up for our next stop, Prague!
