I would like to take back the shred of praise I had for the car we rented from Maria. Just outside Las Vegas in the thick of the heat the air conditioning gave up on us. With the Windows down it felt like we were driving with a constant hairdryer in our face and closed was even worse. We did learn something while driving through the desert. It was extremely boring, hot and a struggle to stay awake however it was perfectly possible to Watch a movie while driving. So we instead of looking at sand we finished game of thrones and watched a couple of CSI.
Our first national park was the Grand Canyon a 5 hour drive from the city of sin. Well actually it was a bit further or less I can't quite remember we had to stop over in flagstaff a little town 2 hours under. Nothing special really just your average American town. We stayed at a rundown motel and ate at a Chinese restaurant. It was the 4th of July but you couldn't really tell they probably forgot . Again we had to much expectations because of Kate Perry and her stupid song. She made it sound like the USA was covered in fireworks. It was remarkably quite and we had a good night sleep. Next day we crossed route 66 for just a minute and turned towards the Grand Canyon. From flagstaff to the national park the road took up some turns and the landscape changed ever slightly. From desert to thick forest to medium desert again.( I call it medium desert since there was kind of vegetation out there).
And was i ever excited about a rock in Australia? The grand Canyon beats that rock by a thousand times. This was massive! Massive in terms of size and wow factor. I can safely say now that I've seen quite a bit of the world, and this site blew my mind all over again. What a place to see. Plus here compared to anywhere else in the world you could get a stamp in your passport, I mean how cool is that? To show at home that we've been to the GC y'all. And to top that all of I became a junior ranger for spotting a deer! Just wow. I stop raving about this place, in one word : Beautiful. One little smudge that had nothing to do with the GC though, when we drove out of the park someone had a head on collision with a bus. We had to stay waiting for 1 hour before we could get a move on towards death valley.
From medium desert to well done desert again. And actually we crossed Las Vegas and made a stop at the LV sign. Lizet had been complaining the whole way about going to an outlet so we made a stop there as well. Before we knew it it was already dark and we had to find a place to crash. We stayed in a motel/casino 2 hours away from LV close to area51. Next day was a long drive to and through the hottest place I've ever been to. It was 50 degrees and when walking about you were literally melting away. The reason it is called death valley is because nothing grows there. We didn't want to camp there, just get out of it ASAP. So this national park was nice but a bit to hot for our liking. Scenery was beautiful though. And the name of the place has a certain ring to it.
From there on we left the desert behind us and came to places where there is lots of life. More people more trees and more animals. The drive to Yosemite National Park is diverse and on this particular route we didn't watch any CSI. It felt like new Zealand, I had to stop the car at every turn to take a picture. Eager to spot a big brown bear or a giant moose. It is a long drive up through the mountains to get to the entrance of the park. But it is worth it. You get to see so many nice cabin logs and lakes. We weren't the only ones to visit because everything in the park was fully booked so we had to go back 50 miles to get a place to sleep. That morning we went up the mountain again. To go for a leisurely stroll. On the beginning of each trail there were steel boxes with a padlock on it. Lizet had been here before and I asked here what it was for. She told me it is to keep the bears from getting your food. It was forbidden to leave any food in your car because if they smelled it they would wreck and tear your vehicle apart. From then on I really wanted to see a bear, they must be huge! From a safe distance of course. But sadly we didn't get to see any (my bear calls didn't work) or maybe we were just lucky. Next stop where the seqoia trees the biggest trees in California and perhaps the world. Nothing much to say about them, they were huge, that about sums it all up.
All the time I had this strange feeling that everywhere we went it felt kind of familiair. The desert, Los Angeles, las Vegas, Yosemite National Park. Basically California and a part of Nevada. It brought back memories of the the golden xbox days playing GTA San Andreas non stop. The scenery of the national parks is breathtaking. Compared to anywhere else in the world I prefer California in nature. The people not so much. And the food is just burgers and more burgers. Fast food or microwave. It got us talking why so many people are so happy with Australia and New Zealand when there is this...
