Rockingham to Perth
Today is our final day with the van so before we left this caravan park we needed to make sure all the waste receptacles are empty and cleaned through. Even more importantly, we needed to pack all we have emptied out of the suitcases and the additional items acquired back into the case and whatever else we can use.
Once all that was done and we'd chatted to another charming ex-UK couple about how wonderful Western Australia is, it's was off to look around Rockingham. Our first visit was to Point Peron which separates Safety Bay from Cockburn Sound and was opposite Garden Island, a restricted area as it is occupied by the Australian navel base. From the point we could see one if not two pods of dolphins playing. Finally we have seen dolphins having been told of numerous locations to see them but never actually seeing them. The area was a stark limestone headland with intricate erosion and some really amazing rock formations. There were two school groups in the area, walking the same route around the headland as us or kayaking offshore. It was a lovely way to spend an hour walking, although the temperature was rapidly rising to 36C so it was good after an hour or so to be back in the air conditioned van.
Once on our way to Perth a little more diesel was required just to make sure we got there. No petrol stations on our route ! To add to the slight concern we were then sent on a detour due to road works. Fortunately the detour led us to a garage so all was OK. Arriving back at the hire depot all was fine and we were reimbursed for the items we had to buy and went off by taxi to our hotel.
As we had hoped from booking it the hotel proved to be well located overlooking the river (if we ignore the building works only up to ground level between us and the river) and right next to the CBD.
We walked down to the ferry terminal a few minutes away to see if we could book our trip to Rottnest Island. The office for the company we had seen advertised was closed but next door was a tour booking office which proved extremely helpful and booked us the Rottnest trip for Thursday but the one we wanted to Freemantle as well on Friday.
After we took a quick look around part of the CBD and had dinner before calling it a day as we are being picked up at 08.30 tomorrow for our trip.
