Awake at the incredibly early hour of 5.00 am, we were off at 6.00 am. Today we planned to walk/hike the canyon rim at Kings Canyon. This walk/hike is 6 km of some steep uphill, some fairly steep downhill, but primarily walking on uneven rock surfaces.
When we got to the start of the route, a wallaby jumped on to the path, directly in front of us, and sat there looking mildly surprised at us. Unfortunately, Lisanne didn't get to the camera on time, but we all saw the wallaby!
Then the climb! It took us 40 minutes to get to the top of the canyon (with rest stops along the way), and then we commenced the rest of the walk/hike.
Kings Canyon is amazing! The colours (red & green, with a clear blue sky) are breathtaking. Like Uluru, Kings Canyon got extra rain over christmas, hence the greenery. The views were awesome. And because we started so early (6.30 am), the temperature was a cool 22 degrees.
It's hard to describe how spectacular the views were during this walk/hike. Even though the ground (ie. rock) was never even, and even though the walking was never easy, the surroundings were simply stunning.
The rock formations were sand dunes turned into sandstone, the sandstone on the ground was wavy from water when it was a sea-bottom many millions of years ago. It was fascinating. The scenery was quite unlike anything we's seen before.
We completed the walk in just under 4 hours, which is pretty good given that by the end of the walk the temperature had reached it's maximum today of 38 degrees.
We drove back to camp, and jumped in the pool, there to stay for a while.
We had a late dinner outside, and had to chase the dingos away!!!

Tomorrow we head back down south, to Kulgera for an overnight stay, and then to Coober Pedy for a couple of nights.
(cover photo is of the canyon -- look for the tiny people right at the top -- we did that too!! more photos to follow when we have faster internet)
