Day Twenty January 25
Today was the first sighting of land since we left Kona, Hawaii. Four sea days in a row before we reached our next destination of Nuku Hiva. This island is part of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia and is our first time visiting.
For those interested, Nuku Hiva was used as a backdrop for season four of the CBS Survivor series.
From the ship it looked like the island was sparsely inhabited.
Upon entering the bay we noted another ship The Aranui was there. This ship supplies goods and materials to the Marquesas Islands and Tahiti. It is half container ship and half tourist/cruise ship. While travelling between the islands, passengers can board the ship for a 14 day cruise which is offered 17 times a year. For those with an explorable nature this might be a cruise to look into as they have botanists and history experts on board.
Our arrival time was delayed by approximately 30 minutes due to strong head winds in the Pacific. This caused the only tour on the island to be also pushed back. Since we were on the afternoon tour it was unfortunately cancelled as there was not time to visit without being late for the last tender.
Tomorrow is another sea day before we reach the island of Rangiroa in Tahiti.
Comments on Rangiroa will be provided in a two days time.
