We woke reasonably late thanks to the extremely comfortable beds.
We headed out for brunch, found a sandwich shop and had a mango shake and chicken sandwich.
Then we walked to the Reunification Palace, paid to get in and explored.
Quite a few interesting things in here, the basement being the best, where a network of planning offices and radio communications were kept.
After momentarily losing Isha in a toilet mix up, we left and walked down to the war remnants museum. Just 15000 dong to enter.
The entrance was surrounded by military aircraft. Quite cool.
The ground floor of the museum had accounts and pictures from the war from the perspective of the Vietnamese, it was quite interesting as before this we had only ever got a one-sided perspective of the war. On the first floor there was three exhibits, the first was about war crimes and had lots of personal accounts and photos, it was really sad and sometimes shocking to see. Then there was an exhibit about agent orange, which was the chemical most commonly sprayed by the us army onto large areas of Vietnam. It turns out that agent orange is extremely poisonous and has had long term effects on the families of many people exposed to the chemical during the war. This was also a really sad exhibit but interesting. Then we saw photos of areas of Vietnam just after the war and how they have recovered and what they look like now. This was much more positive and made us feel a little better. The second floor paid tribute to all the war photographers who risked their lives and had some amazing action shots.
Unfortunately the museum shut at 5 so we had to leave. We got in a taxi to visit the jade pagoda but ended up getting massively ripped off and paid 300,000 dong for a 10 minute journey. Even worse, the jade pagoda was nothing special. Then it started to rain really heavily so after Sam donned an emergency poncho we started to walk towards some restaurants in order to get some dinner. We couldn't find anywhere nice and affordable, so we ended up getting a taxi back to near the hostel and went to a Thai restaurant there. The food was really good and after our feast we went to get some snacks for the bus to Siem Reap and then attempted an early night before the long journey and 6am start the next day.
