Even since I arrived in Australia almost a month ago, there were always a question that always haunted me because I always see the name Ned Kelly cropping up a lot. Today, I found an answer to that question.
We went to Gaol Prison which is a former prison which is now converted to a museum. On the way there, despite the boys' notorious partying exploits, it is the girls that are turning into alcoholics as they were demanded to find a spirit that they tried in Brisbane. This involves checking out almost every off-licence, supermarkets and booze store which is tad annoying!
Eventually we arrived and got our tickets. We visited the Supreme court and took photos of it before attending a police station tour which were amusing but difficult because the guide had to be in the character as a fierce policewomen and this involves lots of shouting which is hard to lip-read. We did see the modern cells which are shocking, we also saw the exercise yard and the solitary cell with all of the soft paddings. This firmly nipped any sign of any deep buried fledging criminal ambitions inside me in the bud!
Last but not the least, we visited the gaol prison which is brilliant because I can make an comparision between the old fashioned cells and the modern cells that I saw in the police station. Overall, though a lot had changed over the years, they looked almost identical! The cells we visited actually housed real inmates and there is a plague on the wall describing their exploits and their fates. There is also a plaster of their face in the cell which is creepy for me to be treading the same boards as rapists and murderers years ago.
The prison is made of three floors, the first floor house most of the inmates, well behaved inmates is moved to the second floor while the inmates up for the release soon or the ones with the preferential treat by the governor is assigned to much more spacious cells on the third floor. There is also a gallow with the noose on the second floor!
I also learnt about the most infamous criminal housed in the prison Ned Kelly whose the exploits is in the mould of Sundance Kid and Bill. His gang even fashioned a home-made armour for the final shoot-out, there is a sample of it which I tried on. Let hope I don't get possessed by Ned Kelly and start to rob banks!
After an enjoyable day, the evening were completed with a visit to Victoria Market to pick up some bargains. Luckily we don't spend too long in there because it was closing up slowly as we arrived! We went back to our hostel which to our amazement, the bar was deserted so we finally have an early night which I was craving for!
