Before I start this entry, I would like to explain to my faithful readers that you may have noticed Sara and Ashley have posted pictures of themselves with each blog entry while I don't, this is due their iPhone having an official app of this website which mean they can upload pictures from their phone while I can't because no computers have a SD card slot which allow me upload pictures from the camera.
Today, we are discovering Shanghai is more to our liking than Beijing because Shanghai is a mixture of western and eastern civilisation with their amazing tall towers and sprawling metro system but with more respectful locals because in Beijing, one fat Chinese man, after seeing a full cable car which included us, took a step back and hurled himself into the cable car and crushing us in the process!!
On the way to the destination below, We met a deaf boy who had just quit his job in the garage literally minutes before meeting us because he were trying to save up for visa and transport cost to Australia and he wanted a better wage. It showed us the contrast of the dreams between me who wanted to get a degree, get a good job and a nice house compared to that deaf boy who is trying to escape his life for a better life. (He went back to his old job next day) I didn't have a heart to tell him that Australia is unlikely to accept him in because I wanted to preserve his dream.
Anyway, back to the point, we visited the Pearl Tower which is really amazing but we didn't went inside because it were too expensive and we went on a tour bus but during negotiating with one of companies, one woman who sell tickets for the bus were so terrified by us gesturing and asking the price of the ticket she cunningly ran back inside her bus and told the driver to drive off leaving us speechless!!
We went to a rival company instead and got in their bus, during the process of buying the ticket, we were distracted by a rather annoying local boy who attempted to copy our gestures and tried to sell us his leaflets even when it is obvious that the leaflets were free. I confess I was so incensed that when we got on the bus, I mimicked his gestures back at him but he was defiant and mimicked me back and we ended up laughing about our attempts at mimicking other each.
The mood, further lifted by slightly rubbish but free orange juice were darkened when we realised the bus were a rip off and only took us on a stretch of a road but we still saw many buildings and the river separating the two sides of the city. We saw headquarters of HSBC bank and Apple which explain why there were so many iPad,iPhone and MacBook users in our hostel.
We headed to Nanjing Street which is bit like Wangfujing in Beijing and to my shame, I had Subway. We walked along the street and popping in one of shops occasionally and we also visited in People Square before heading back to hostel where the lads liven up to the notorious British drinking culture by having three pints and a shot of abstaine in a space of a hour and half. We then met two girls who attend Nottingham and Leicester Uni respectively. This excites Ashley and Dom very much who have to endure me and Sara kissing and hugging. I fear I have to keep a eye on them two in the forthcoming days......
