The night bus to Phnom Penh was an experience. Sarah hated it, i didnt mind it too much. The journey took 11 hours rather than the advertised 7, and had none of the services it said (I.e air con, wifi etc) and the 'beds' were built for Hobbits.
We arrived to a swarm of Tuk Tuk drivers. After dumping our bags, we headed to the Killing Fields; where thousands of men, women and children were murdered as part of Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge regime (between 2-3 million people were murdered during the regime). There are still bones and teeth coming to the surface during monsoon season, and hundreds of skulls displayed.
We also visited the S-21 museum, a school that was turned into a prison and torture chamber during the Khmer Rouge regime. Pretty brutal. Mad to think it was only 30 years or so ago.
After visiting these places, the Tuk Tuk driver asked if we wanted to go to the shooting range nearby...didn't think it was appropriate! You shoot watermelons, but you can pay to shoot a cow instead. Someone at the hostel reckoned that if you were feeling extravagant you could 'buy an old person' to shoot and the money goes to their family. Mental. Don't know how true that is.
Watched the merseyside derby in a sports bar, a lot of Liverpool fans. Some of the locals sat near me starting cheering on Everton to annoy their mate.
Phnom Penh was busy; loads of people, motorbikes and Tuk tuks. I could happily spend ages there. Spent the rest of time in museums, bars and restaurants.
Started getting the hang of the 'bum guns', despite their power - They're like a car jet wash. The plumbing isn't as advanced as back home, so no flushing toilet roll!
Update on the tanning situation: Sarah claims she can see tan lines of my feet from my flip flops. I'm not convinced. I'll keep you posted. Going to Kampot next, Southern Cambodia.
