Due to the storm Sunday night, Monday turned out to be an exploration day instead of a festival working day.
Our apartment overlooks the Jewish cemetery. The cemetery was the only plot of land given to the Jewish to bury their dead, so there are layers and layers of bodies stacked on top of each other, and layers of headstones slanting out in different directions haphazardly all over the small plot of land.
We ventured out into the sunlight. I found a Hauschka store - so much cheaper than in the US! I might really have to buy some. We went and got some groceries again and learned that at Billa, you HAVE to put your produce in bags and you HAVE to weigh it and you HAVE to sticker it in order to buy it. It was a tough lesson to learn today.
We also found a chocolatier which was decadent. There were over 100 truffles to choose from. Every one of them brilliant.
We passed by lots of groups with our wristband on - taking over Prague like an infestation. And we saw lots of chinsy souvenirs so we started a game about who could find the gaudiest souvenir. I won. It was a baby head in a coffin with other disturbing things happening in, on and around it.
We walked across town, over Charles bridge and to a grand café called Café Savvoy. We sat outside and got something called fruit and cheese dumplings. They tasted like sourpatch kids. It was like a shaved ricotta, topped with 3 dumplings, each of those dumplings filled with a whole baked apricot, on plate with a bowl of butter and a powder sugar shaker. We combined all the ingredients and it tasted so unique. We couldn't finish the plate. But we did leave room for cappuccinos after the meal.
The trams run on metal tracks built into the center of the streets and electricity. At every major intersection, there are reflective wind meters clipped to the electric wires. I am still not exactly sure what they are for. But they flicker. Red and yellow.
One of the tourists' favorite things to do is ride around in old classic cars for tours of the city. That and carriage rides. I get it.
We passed a chalk board outside of a bar that read "everything ok? if yes -à drink. If no--à drink!" it's such a Czech motto. I liked it.
Also passed the only plus size women's clothing store that I'm sure exists in Prague. I wonder what the stats are on people's health. I wonder how it's trending over here.
Some of the tour boats have lounge chairs in them for seating. It's such a testament to the value on relaxation and enjoyment here. In the states we have rows of hard seating or benches. The more people can fit in, the more revenue we generate.
The manhole covers here are very intricate and ornate. They are not manufactured in Neenah. And the paper products are not Kimberly-Clark either.
We ended the night by heading to the festival in a show of support. The energy seemed good there. People were excited to begin. They started with a talent show, then went into the "good news show" and finished the night with worship. They had an interpreter in the front next to the stage which was a nice touch.
