Today was an amazing day. The kind of day you dream about or see in movies. Heather and I spent all day walking around, roaming the cobblestone streets of Prague. The city is indescribably romantic and magical. It consumes you. I woke up to the sound of horses click-clacking past my window. Yes, that really happened.
We started off heading to the market to get groceries for the apartment. The closest spot was a little corner store chain. While we were in line, Olivia Munn cut us off with her eggs. Her outfit was tragic and she is way hotter on TV. ;) The city is very dog friendly. You'll see dogs of all shapes and sizes walking around, off leash, very well behaved. Every time we pass one Heather laughs at me because I wave or swoon or say hello to the dog.
Walking the streets we found a baby Dior, and later a baby Dolce and Chanel. I'm sure that level of wealth and absurdity exists in the states too, but I haven't ever seen actually storefronts for those indulgences until now. We also walked past a man and his dog. He was laid out on a park bench outside of a small chapel. His dog was asleep under the bench. No leash. He had a hat over his face and a newspaper on his chest. No joke. It was so picturesque.
There were also really large trucks driving around. They looked like what we would call streetsweepers. Except they were shooting out water from the front and back of the truck. Just enough to get the streets wet. I am not sure what they were hoping to achieve. They weren't washing the streets, or cleaning them. I thought it might be to cool them off but the cobblestones don't crack like asphalt or concrete in heat, so I'm still not sure what the purpose was.
We went and sat at a café called Friends. It was so delightful. We were there for about 3 hours. Chatting. It was a Prague moment. We eventually left and on our way to a pub, we found several spots that sold marijuana beer. Haven't tried it yet, but contemplating it just because I've never seen it before. They also sell Duff beer here. Yea. The imaginary stuff Homer gets drunk off of. They really sell it here. Stopped in a store or 2 to see if we could get Heather some shorts. She didn't pack for near 100 degree weather. We found some at ONeil eventually and will wear them the entire week probably. =)
Walked through an open air market. There were several vendors that you would suspect. Food, trinkets, etc. The main square with the clock-tower has the most delicious smelling and most color food. From smoked meats to carved cheeses to cold gelato. We found a juice bar down a forgotten street and got some fresh squeezed veggies. Quite an exciting find given that the Czech diet is mainly a protein and 2 starches for every meal. It's not common to eat fruits or veggies regularly. Found our way to a pub that had Koala signs all over it. Turns out the owners of this bar adopted multiple koalas over time. They named their bar after them. And they even had a Koala lager on tap. I ordered it of course. It was delicious. And Koala free.
Beer here costs less than a dollar for a bottle larger than what we would get in a 6pack. It actually costs about 50 cents in a grocery store. It's cheaper than water. Even though it's safe to drink the tap water here, restaurants sell bottled water - still or sparkling. I feel foolish ordering water and always getting these enormous or dainty little glass bottles of water. Seems so luxurious.
After the Koala pub we headed back home to get ready to meet some friends. Angelic, a planning committee member, was left without a roommate or a place to stay, so we offered up our living room and second bathroom. We waited for her to arrive before we left. Most of the US folks had flown in today and wanted to get together before the festivities kicked off tomorrow. We suggested an outdoor beer garden across the river and up a hill. On our way over, we walked along the river. Fireworks started spontaneously erupting and provided us with a pretty show for about 15 minutes. Toward the end, because it was so close, it felt more like we were under attack.
We met up with Meredith, Crystal, Andrea Lee and Sha at the beer garden. It was extremely hot but fun. There was a great view of the city from the hill. They only sold beer and there were 2 kinds on tap - dark and light. There was also a drunk man moving from table to table trying to drink people's discarded beer. He followed us to 2 different tables. I think he even drank a cup of urine. It was heartbreaking. There was a wedding in the pavilion on the park grounds. The music was 80s and in English, so we figured it was a US destination wedding. There were bathrooms on site, and you had to pay to use them. About 25 cents.
Headed home around 12pm. Heather and I want to get up early to prep for our week.
