After leaving Tully we spent 3 days at the free camping spot at Bilyana. We were able to network with other campers and find out the best free camping spots down south.
The day we broke camp we headed up to Murray Falls, an easy walk along the boardwalk to another spectacular waterfall.
We headed down through Cardwell, an oceanside town with views of Hinchinbrook Island. We had morning tea looking out to sea. Since the cyclone that ripped through Ingham a couple of years back, the Hichinbrook Shire have completely refurbished the waterfront with paved walkways and picnic areas. Absolutely fantastic.
We headed next to Ingham where we camped on the new free RV camping area next to the Tourist Bureau. It has only been open for 5 weeks on a trial basis and everybody who camps there has only praise for the initiative. Even Bert become notorious when he had a conversation with the councillor and said how important it is for these small towns to encourage the tourist dollar by having free camping.
The area is next to a wetland and once again the shire have put a lot of work into the boardwalks, picnic areas and a fantastic tourist bureau and Cafe.
We had a drink at the pub that was sung about by Slim Dusty when he recorded 'The Pub with no Beer'.
After 2 great days in Ingham (and 2 fantastic entre's of tiger prawns) we moved on to Bushy Parker Park in Rollingstone. We went to Bangal Beach to the markets, Jourama Falls and a rather treacherous (according to Fran and me) drive up to Paluma - about 2000 feet high. We had a mango icecream at the Frosty Mango and we visited the fruit and vegi truck on Sunday morning and bought pineapples for $2 and extremely cheap vegis.
Yesterday we came through to Townsville and camped at the Bush Oasis caravan park. We took a trip into town and drove up Castle Hill that overlooks Townsville, the Harbour and Magnetic Island.
Next stop is Charters Towers.
