This travelling bit doesn't allow much time to write the blog and before you know it you're miles ahead and the blog is miles behind.
Our stay in Joe's Country (being Jo Beijelke Peterson) was delightful. We had our first camping in this area in a little place called Murgon. Murgon have gone out of their way to welcome travellers by setting up free camping at their old caravan park. Well, when I told Bert we would be staying in a caravan park for free he said 'I'll be really interested to see that!' and he was pleasantly surprised such that he rates it as the best free camp of the trip. We had our own concrete slab, water right next to the van, green grass and, after paying the $10 deposit for the key (which we got back at the end of the stay) we had the best toilets and hot showers. From Murgon we were able to go out to the Beijelke Peterson Dam, up to the lookout on the mountain next to Murgon and the Dairy Heritage museum - one of the best museums around.
We travelled on to Woolooran, another little town about 16 kilometres north of Kingaroy. This stop, also free, enabled us to leave the vans parked and we could travel into Kingaroy to see the peanut silos (see the photo) and check out the town. A very nice place to visit and a really good RSL club where we had lunch.
As we travelled on we passed through Kingaroy on our way to Nanango. Even though this is quite a small town it was a big place when Ergon power were setting up their hydro system. As a memorial to their presence in the town Ergon have assisted the tourist bureau to set up a fantastic display of how much power is used by various light globes including hallogen and LEDs. Fran rode the bike there to demonstrate the power needed to generate various power sources. For her efforts she got an all day sucker lolly.
Our next stop was at the Goomeri showgrounds. This town is host to the pumpkin rolling competition where they roll pumpkins down the main street.
Our final stop (for a couple of days) was Gympie. We timed our run into Gympie really well as the weekend before our arrival was the Gympie Muster. We camped at Chatswood Park, a free camp located along the Bruce Highway. Once again we were back to the ear plugs and Tony was the only one able to sleep and not hear the constant rumble of trucks down the highway.
We are having a ball and looking forward to our run into the sunshine coast, Toowoomba and Brisbane.
