Litchfield National Park was stunning! We set aside three days to explore this area with its waterfalls, water holes and termite mounds. To get to Litchfield National Park you travel to Bachelor, a small town on the edge of the park where there was once a thriving Uranium Mine (Rum Jungle). Now the town is reknowned for it educational facilities boasting an area school and an Arts University.
On our way into the park we stopped to look at the magnetic and cathedral termite mounds. The Magnetic mounds run north and south to minimise the amount of sunshine and heat on them.
Our next stop was at Florence Falls, a walk down to the plunge pool at the bottom of the falls of approximately 140 steps. Of course what goes down must come back up so the walk back to the top tested the legs. However, the swim in the plunge pool was amazing and we were grateful for the opportunity to cool off. Temperatures up here have been in the 30s with evenings around 24.
Our final stop where we set up camp was at Wangi Falls (above) where the rangers had checked the swimming hole for crocodiles and declared it safe. We spent 3 glorious days swimming and relaxing beside the pool. Fran and Bert paved the way by taking their chairs down around 10 in the morning, with lunch and book, and stayed to well into the afternoon. We followed suit, of course and by the time we left Litchfield we were well relaxed and ready for our next adventure.
