Yes, your right, the photo is pit lane at Bathurst. Tony has been hanging out to get to Bathurst and drive the van and Bemma around the 6 klm Mt Panorama circuit. But more of that later.
After leaving Forbes we headed to Cowra. We had a one night stop over in Gooloogong , a little town between Forbes and Cowra where the Land Army was based during WW2 and the ladies in this army were responsible for making sure there was food packs and essentials provided to the soldiers overseas. They have a fantastic museum dedicated to the Land Army who had a reunion recently. The camping spot here was fantastic with power and water provided for a donation. Even had hot showers.
We then moved onto Cowra. What a fabulous spot. There is the most magnificent Japanese Garden (see photos), a hotel that serves fabulous meals for $5 ea (we had roast chicken and vegetables) and some exquisite buildings. Cowra is famous for the breakout of Japanese prisoners of war where several Australians were killed and many Japanese were also killed. We enjoyed our stay here camped by the river. There were some fantastic murals on the piers of the bridge which are included in the photo album.
We headed onto Orange on our way to Bathurst and were amazed at the fruit trees and grapevines in this region. We camped at a roadside stop between Orange and Bathurst and it wasn't too bad considering it was a major highway into Sydney.
In Bathurst we headed straight to the Bathurst 1000 circuit and museum. Tony was in his element looking at all the cars and bikes that have been involved in Bathurst. They have a very moving section to Peter Brock who was killed in the hills of Perth. We finally drove around the circuit with the van and as much as Tony would have liked to let it rip he was contained by the 60 km road signs - the circuit is a gazetted road when not used for racing. Alas we had to be content with just driving where all the greats in motor racing have been.
Next stop Goulbourn and then Canberra.
