Jonny's South American Adventure!
The bruises from beach football have been replaced by dozens of mozzy bites, and after two days of rain we decided enough was enough and we moved on from Montevideo further along the coast to Colonia. Montevideo itself was nice enough, was just a shame the weather was how it was. The only thing of note that happened was that we went out on Friday night for a fair old session, which I don't think the guy running the hostel appreciated that much when we rocke dup at 4 in the morning ringing the buzzer to get let in! We think we maybe missed a curfew or something, given his blunt "Hola" in the morning!
ANyway, after vegetating 'till the afternoon we got ourselves together and caught the bus down the coast to gorgeous Colonia, we ended up staying in a kind of converted barn outhouse for the night since it was the only room the hostel had left! We got it cheaper than the other rooms though, and just sat up late havin a few more beers with some Aussie blokes we met at the last hostel and some particularly foxy Belgian ladies.
Colonia really is a great little place that used to be the centre of smuggling goods into the country, and it manages to retain that kinda atmosphere which is nice. So we just spent yesterday walking round all the cobbled streets and the port (whilst obviously getting sunburnt), taking in the sights, whilst having a nice beer of course!
Then in the early evening we caught the ferry to Buenos Aires, ,which was a really nice change to mundane bus journeys. On it we bumped into an Israeli couple that we had also met in Montevideo, so we passed the trip being taught a new card game until the spectacular skyline of Buenos Aires by night came into view, then we moved below deck to take it in closely as the ferry approached the dock. In those few minutes I was completely hooked, and I already feel intoxicated by the atmosphere here. Despite wandering round for ages trying to find a particular hostel, and the Israeli guy having a death wish by stopping to read the map in the middle of a 14-lane road, I didn't care cos I knew i wa sdoing it in what must be one of the best places on earth. There's gonna be a lot of partying done over the next 12 days - particularly on Friday for my birthday!
Until my next sober hour,
Jonny
