After a lovely unexpected meal of mussels and NZ wine organised for us by Lowri and the gang to help us continue celebrating A’s birthday, last night we planned a sailing Saturday for today. Catching the ferry back across to Auckland this morning we checked in for our treat of sailing in an America’s Cup yacht in Auckland harbour. It looked as expected a pared down racing yacht of 70 ft. It was sunny to start and she quickly picked up speed as soon as the sails went up. We had a close encounter with a seaplane just taking off and headed off to the islands at the edge of Auckland harbour. After an hour true to form the NZ weather blew a rain squall and the sails had to come down as these yachts are made for certain conditions and if you step outside them you endanger the mast and rigging. Despite that we had a fun two hours and afterwards stayed on the waterfront, visiting the maritime museum so one way and another we had a watery day to finish our time here.
