Brief China update:
Finally, I am in a more civilized country as compared to India or Nepal.
Day 1-
Martial arts training starts at 5 am. I slept in since I did not go to bet until 2 am. But I did make it to the evening class for boxing training. Each evening class for the martial arts training has a different theme and a different coach like the boxing coach or a different fitness coach. I guess it is to ensure that the team gets a little variation and are able to bond with eachother.
Day 2-
Networking is important in China. It was only the 2nd day and I got a job! Well I have a job lined up through the school to teach english, but the school is out until the fall semester (september). So in the time being, I gave Demos for a private company for english tutoring. If I give a good demo than the client will hire me and I will teach the client english one on one.
Day 3-
I got my first client to teach english to.... her name is Ga Ga and she is 1 yr & 8 months old. She is suprisingly bright. she can already say hello and thank you in english.
Day 4-
Woke up at 5 am for one on one training.
Language-
No one speaks english here and the menus are only in chinese! Either I learn chinese or starve because I dont know what to order.
Tea thermoses-
-Just about everyone carries their own personal tea thermos around with them. Some are double glass, tin or plastic with a filter to filter out the tea leaves. Green tea is the most common tea in China. The tea sits at bottom of the thermos and they just keep refilling the water when it runs out.
water bottles-
Just like the tea thermoses, they carry around reusable water bottles and often put chrysanthemum flowers in it to flavor it.
loose face-
Chinese people strive to maintain their face/reputation in front of other people. It is very important to them to live up to others expectations of them and is in no means in their culture to loose face.
Food
greasy foods-
Every thing you order here is VERY oily! Noodles for example will be dripping with oil and yet the chinese remain skinny even though they eat like 5 plates of noodles, veg and meats for lunch or dinner. How they do it is beyond me. I have never seen a culture eat so much. The soups are often filled with weird parts of the animal like stomach & intestines.
Taxi route-
If your not going where the cab wants to go, then you dont get a ride...mainly near touristy areas.
Pizza is a luxery-
While a large meal costs 3-6 yeun 0.50-$1 meal, pizza will cost about 140 yeun or $23. Many of the people can not afford Papa Johns pizza or Pizza Hut.
Strange foods:
-Red bean milk
-Bubble tea with gelatin balls that you suck up w/ a straw
-meat & squid on a stick on side of road
-stinky tofu
.
Team-
-Travel the world to give demos
-Hollywood will be making a cartoon of them
-They are training the old martial arts that govt has outlawed and brining back the restricted martial arts. The gov't, being communism, outlawed the ancient martial arts fighting style so that the people could not rise up against the gov't. So the martial arts being taught in schools is just for show and physical fitness. The students do not know how to actually use it to fight.
School
-The university is quite large
-We live on campus
-There is a pool, tracks, soccor field, many gyms, cafeteria, ect.
-I have an appointment w/ a medical school this week to talk about their program.
My options:
-medical school 6 yrs incl. 1 yr internship
-masters 1 yr for the classes and an extra 2-3 yrs just to get the paper degree
--martial arts (Qi Gong & Tia chi) & chinese medicine
Eating out
-Who ever gives the invitation is the one who pays for dinner (its so cheap anyway).
The people-
-The women look like porcelin dolls
-Thye like to look young, so they wear baby doll dresses and overall shorts.
-Their hairstyles are emo/japanamation hairstyles
-Many are child like
-The boys and girls are literally "just" friends. You rarely see boyfriend/girlfriend relationships.
-They are overly nice to people.
-They dont work hard at all and everyone has a lunch break from 11 or 12-3:00 where they eat lunch, drink, and nap. This makes it hard to ever get anything accomplished here!
