Adelaide has a few main sites...The zoo with the panda (saw pandas in China), the Central markets (visited them yesterday) and the beach (soon to be traveling to the east coast for the best beaches). So we found there was not much to do but we did discover Adelaide rents bikes free of charge, and as we both love cycling this seemed an ideal way to see the city.
We collected our single speed retro bikes and headed to the centre of Adelaide to visit the museum, there was a photography exhibition that we had seen advertised. Although on arriving at the museum it appeared we were a week too early for the exhibition, so we had a look round the museum instead. They had a very interesting section on Aboriginal culture and art, although a lot of the clothes/baskets were made from human hair! The second most interesting part of the museum was the bug room, although it did contain many dead items in preserving jars. The interesting part was the live spiders they had on display, we finally saw which ones to avoid that could kill us! One of the spiders egg sacks had started hatching and the container was full of tiny transparents spiders. I am not sure why they were not all being destroyed but we are in an upside down country.
Having walked around the museum we crossed the road to a nearby food court to grab some lunch. I love food courts with their huge selection of dishes, you can both choose what you want and still sit together. Next it was time to head back to return the bikes in time, we followed the cycle path along the picturesque river. The problem began when it was time to leave the river path and head towards the cycle centre. Bearing in mind the map we were given was missing a number of road names so it was very misleading. We ended up traveling in the wrong direction for about 30 mins. Only realising when we asked a repair man working on a house where we were. In discovering our location and knowing the cycle centre closed shortly it was a mad dash back to get the bikes back in time. Thankfully we made it!
Once we safetly dropped the bikes off and our photo IDs returned we headed to the shopping district where we discovered K Mart. This was a large department store that seems to be our equivalent to Primark, so we picked up a couple of things to refresh our wardrobes. During the walk home we came across Nandos a favourite of mine back home so we decided to try the Australian version. After poor service and noticing the walls were covered in flies we quickly canceled our order and went to Noodle Box instead. We returned to the hostel to do our washing and for the first time in our trip suffered the effects of poor hostel appliances having 3 shrinkage casualities!
