We took a boat from Lombok to the Gili Island, Meno. The boat trip only took 20 minutes, but they definately got their monies worth and there were about 50 people on a 25 people boat. As the islands have nothing on them, they have to use the boats to get food and supplies there. So as well as too many people we had baskets and baskets of food, drinks, a couple of chickens, luggage and even a computer and speakers! lol.... We made it though, safe and sound and arrived on a beautiful island surrounded by water so clear you could see the fish and reef. Definately the best place we'd seen in Indonesia.
Of the three Gili islands one is busy, one in between and one quiet. We thought that Meno was in between, but turned out it was the quiet one with only 100- 150 tourists on it and 500 residents.
We found a little hut to sleep in which was ok but not great. We were told that there weren't really many places left so we didn't fancy walking around all day with no where to sleep, so it was better than a poke in the eye and came with breakfast. Then later the first day we went for a little walk and found a room that was much better for the same price, so moved the next day to a place called Debby's.
We walked around the island to check it out, but there was nothing really other than a few places to stay and a few bars for the sunset. There were three massive resorts that were derelict and we asked someone later what had happened as they looked like they were ace. He said that ever since the Bali bombings in 2005, fewer people are going to Indo and the larger places couldn't keep the business going! Mental..!
We walked around to the other side of the island to watch the sunset one night and have a few beers which was really lovely. It was so dark down the little lanes later on that we decided it would be better to jump in a little horse and cart. It may well have been one of the funniest nights ever, as it was pitch black and every now and then you'd here a branch being caught before it smashed us in the face! lol... not so good...!
The next day, Ant had a bad stomach and was ill for a few days so we just chilled by the room and read our books. Such hard work...! ;o)
There was a polish family in the room next to us and one day he randomly asked if we fancied sharing a glass bottom boat trip which was 250,000rhps with him and his son, as his son couldn't go in the water due to ear problems but he wanted to see a Hawksville Sea Turtle, so we agreed. We met him near the beach and went around the island for an hour. It was pretty cool and along with the fish we've seen diving and snorkelling, we have officially seen everything from 'Finding Nemo' Yay.....! At the end of the trip, I handed over 125,000 and said thanks. Then the polish guy asked us to pay 80,000 each and he'd pay 90k, i.e we pay for the little boy. Ant started to get out more money whilst I stood there wondering what was happening, as he asked us to come along to help out, or so I thought! He saw my reaction and said ok, 75,000 each, so ended up giving him 150,000. The cheeky git...! Anyways, we had a good time and the little boy saw his turtle so all good.
After a few days in Meno, we had eaten at the three restaurants a few times each and were getting a little bored of the choices so we planned to move to Gili Trawangan, the busier island. The boat only costs about 1.00 and takes a few minutes.
