Hola everyone, now it's time to attempt some Spanish as we now embark on the Spanish leg of our trip. It began in a way that very much reminded us that we are back to being simple backpackers. After a lovely farewell lunch at Suzie and Marks it took us seven hours (thanks to a huge festival making the trains have unexpected detours) and 4 trains later to reach our first destination, the beautiful coastal city of San Sebastian. We arrived late and tired so decided to call it an early night as our late arrival meant we now only had one day to explore the city.
Up until now we somehow managed to escape staying in any shared hostel accommodation so at first were relieved to find our roommates to be two Aussie blokes. Unfortunately the one sleeping on the flimsy bunk below Nat had a habit for bringing home female company- both nights!! All I can say is that I wish being rocked sent me to sleep....but it didn't.
So after a less than average sleep we tried our best to cover the city in one day. Starting with the cathedral, then a walk up the big hill the the Jesus statue (think rio on a smaller scale) for amazing views of the city. Then we explored the old town and came across a high profile wedding at the cathedral with hundreds of spectators and really cool traditional basque dancing when the couple emerged. After some beach time we hired bikes and road around the city and coast including through the man made 2km tunnel for bikes only, random.
This was the point where Ants stomach problems (which we now think was a week of a bad case of travelers diarrhea) reached its climax so we went home. After a rest we attempted a cider bar, cool place where barrels of cider are mounted onto the wall and you pour yourself unlimited cider while sampling some local cuisine. We were proud of our days efforts but poor Ant was to pay the price :(
