It was probably one of the last warm days of the summer, not that we knew that at the time. Pippa and I left London and headed down an A road followed by an M road and found our way to Wilmington near Long Man, East Sussex.
The long Man is a chalk hill carving in East Sussex down near the coast. Most of England's hill carvings are in Wiltshire and are horses, but this is a giant with 2 long sticks. So we set off to see it.
We spent a slow trip out of London as is always the case on the weekend. We stopped at the Giant's Rest pub for lunch. Anouk enjoyed a long sleep in the sun while we had a delicious lunch and a glass or 2.
After lunch we drove to the car park across the field from the Long Man. The view across the fields showed the Long Man up the side of the hill. We walked across the road and Anouk took off up the path that all the viewers take.
At the base it is interesting that the perspective alters greatly and it is really designed to be viewed from afar. The top is much wider and this is obvious from the hill the man is on.
As it was hot we decide not to climb to the top of the hill. We followed around the sheep path and made our way into a woodland at the end of the hill. This was a cool change after the heat and our lack of water as we were not prepared for this.
After a few tree identifying stops and photos across the paddocks we made our way back to the car via the little stone church next to the car park.
It was a great day out of London and the first of what I hope to be several visits to archaic sites around Britain.
