Drove back to the GOR yesterday, stopping off at Stevenson's Falls, an impressive waterfall deep in the forest south of a place called Forrest. Then on to Apollo Bay to admire and walk on its long, soft sandy beach. Temperatures for past few days have been around 15 - 18c and cloudy so no-one swimming. Apollo Bay is well known for its seafood so we bought a cooked crayfish to eat later. We had already booked an apartment in Lorne for tonight so headed off on the most picturesque part, so far, of The GOR. Called in at Kennett's Creek where koalas live in the eucolyptus trees here. We did see 2 koalas, both high in the trees and managed to photograph them.
The apartment at Lorne overlooked the bay and was on two levels with the bedroom upstairs so we could lie in bed looking out over the sea. The weather still indifferent so no sunshine to put the 'icing on the cake'. Lorne is another pretty town with many attractive cliff side properties which all have uninterrupted views of the Southern Ocean. Today (Friday)we continued our drive, stopping at the memorial to the soldiers of WW1 who built the GOR on their return from the war and for whom the road is a lasting legacy. Then onto Torquay, the end (or start) of the GOR. Torquay is Australia's surfing capital and where the big brand names such as Rip Curl and Quicksilver originated. A 2 hour drive brought us back to Melbourne.
